How can I calculate whether my dog is a healthy weight?

You can find out whether your dog is a healthy weight by analysing their body condition score (BCS). This test uses your sight and touch to assign your dog a number from 1 to 9. A score between 1-3 indicates an underweight dog, 4 and 5 is a healthy weight, 6 and 7 is overweight, and then 8 and 9 indicates an obese dog. 

Analyse your dog’s ribs; they should have minimal fat coverage and be noticeable with gentle pressure. Then look for an abdominal tuck: the belly should be visibly tucked from the side. Finally, look from above to identify a waist between the back legs and ribcage. If any of these are more pronounced, score your dog lower. If they are not present, choose a higher score.

How quickly should an overweight dog lose weight? 

Safe weight loss rates vary by dog. However, typically, dogs can safely lose 1% of their weight in a week, working out to between 3 and 5% of their weight a month.
