We care about every item your dog eats and have only chosen ethically sourced natural ingredients for our dog food for small dogs. Everything used is grown and harvested in the UK, and we take special care to use wonky items that supermarkets turn down. It means that we can reduce food waste whilst still packing nourishing vitamins, minerals and healthy fats into our food to support your tiny furry friend. Plus, the insect larvae contain almost double the protein contents of beef and produce 100x less greenhouse gas. Here are our nutritional values and recipes:

Testimonials

My Patterdale Terrier has been eating Bug Bakes for over 12 months now - he is full of energy, has a shiny coat & looks fit & healthy.
It makes me feel better that I am helping the environment too.
Thank you

Sue Smith

My cockapoo loves grain-free bug bakes. We stumbled across the brand when trying to find alternatives to meat and fish-based dog food, initially feeding a half and half mix for a couple of months. My dog is now on a fully bug bakes diet and is thriving - she is full of energy, her coat has become softer, and I love that her diet is now much more climate-friendly. Highly recommended.

FAQ

How much food does my small breed dog need?

Every small breed dog requires a different amount of food each day. Our custom calculator can determine how much you should feed your dog, depending on their size, age, gender, breed and activity level.

How can I safely switch my small dog to a new food?

When changing your dog’s diet, it is vital that you transition slowly. Follow this guide to avoid illness:

Day 1-2: Mix 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food

Day 3-4: Mix 50% of the new food with 50% of the old food

Day 5-6: Mix 75% of the new food with 25% of the old food

Day 7 onwards: 100% of the new food

Should I give my small dog small-size kibble?

It is easier for a small dog to digest smaller kibble; however, as our insect-based dog food is cold-pressed, this is no problem for small breeds. The composition is easy to chew and digest, regardless of how small your dog is.

When should I give my small dog senior dog food?

Small breeds age slower than bigger dogs, meaning they are typically considered senior later than their larger counterparts. However, that does not necessarily mean your small breed dog should move on to senior food later.

Once your dog passes seven years of age, monitor their weight and diet closely. You do not need to change their food if they maintain a healthy weight. Simply ensure their diet has a high protein intake and reasonable calorie count, as their fast metabolism will slow over time.

What ingredients should I avoid in small-breed dog food?

When choosing small-breed dog food, you should avoid

  • Artificial dyes
  • The synthetic vitamin menadione
  • Preservatives like BHA, BHT, TBHQ and ethoxyquin
  • The moisturiser propylene glycol
  • generic unknown ‘meat’

The first four products have been linked to health conditions like cancer and Heinz Body Anemia, and generic ‘meat’ may trigger an allergic reaction.

What Food Does My Small Dog Need?

Small breed dogs require smaller foods that they are able to digest and enough protein and calories to keep up with their fast metabolisms. That is why our cold-pressed, insect-based protein is perfect.

How does small-breed dog food differ from standard kibble?

Small-breed dog food meets the needs of smaller dogs. It needs a suitable calorie content for their increased metabolic rate and a consistency that is easier on slighter jaws and digestive systems, just like cold-pressed foods.
